Flowers Within Vol. 2

This print is probably my favorite so far. It was made with four layers using film and photo emulsion and then printed on pink card-stock. The original plan was to use three layers but I had to double the green layer to get the color I wanted. To do this is I started with a darker green so it would show up on the pink paper then went over it with just the neon green to brighten the color. The next layer was the blue and purple gradient and then the key (line art) layer. I was going to do black but I had left it at home so i mixed a very dark purple that looks black over the layers. It was truly a happy accident because I feel that the purple is richer and fits better with the print.

The concept of this piece was developed over years and the progress reflects my growth as an artist. The idea behind this print was to remake an old oil pastel drawing I had done two years ago. I had posted some art online and some one had mentioned how different that piece was compared to my newer work. So this print was to bring that oil pastel piece into my current “style”. The flowers coming out of her are poppies, oranges and their blossoms, and chrysanthemums. The poppies and oranges represent living in California. The chrysanthemums are just flowers that I enjoy drawing. They all have eyes and there are faces on the oranges to represent my love of Halloween and general spookiness. The eyes on her chest are because eyes are my go to doodle while also censoring her nipples in a way that doesn’t feel like censorship. The hair has a cloud texture because of my love of Japanese woodblock prints. The original oil pastel drawing was based on a quick sketch done to test out some new markers. Both were done with colors and elements that I like draw and I wanted to carry over that love of drawing to this print.
